Human First Athlete Pathway™

A Developmentally-Aligned System for Growth & Performance

Aligned with Real Colorado’s Core Values

The Human First Athlete Pathway™ provides a clear, structured way for Real Colorado to deliver on its commitment to developing the complete player, both on and off the field:

  • Develop the complete person → Identity, emotional regulation, confidence

  • Promote curiosity to passion → Growth mindset, self-awareness

  • Compete to succeed → Resilience, composure, performance under pressure

  • Train to win → Consistent whole-person habits, routines, focus, and execution

  • Develop authentic leaders → Ownership, accountability, leadership development, identity

  • The Human First Athlete Pathway™ is a developmentally aligned system designed to teach the right mental performance skills at the right time. As athletes grow, the demands of their sport increase—physically, mentally, and emotionally. This pathway ensures they are equipped to meet those demands at each stage.

This work builds on the foundation already introduced through the Green Edge approach, helping athletes and coaches understand how the nervous system impacts performance through Green (regulated), Yellow (heightened), and Red (overwhelmed) zones.

Growth is what drives performance. This system develops both, intentionally and progressively.

The Pathway (The System of Mental Performance)

Foundation (Ages 13–14) → Performance (Ages 15–16) → Leadership (Ages 17–18) Build Stability → Perform Under Pressure → Lead & Own It

Proven Partnership with Real Colorado

Through our existing work together, we have already introduced and applied these concepts across teams. Athletes and coaches are beginning to understand how performance is directly tied to their internal state and environment.

Athletes have reported meaningful improvements in confidence, emotional regulation, and their ability to apply mental performance tools in training and competition. Coaches are beginning to practice Green Edge skills.
This pathway builds on that foundation creating a clear, long-term system to deepen and scale this work across age groups.

The Pathway (The System of Mental Performance)

  • At this stage, athletes are developing self-awareness and beginning to experience increased pressure and comparison. Instruction focuses on helping athletes recognize and understand their Green, Yellow, and Red zones and how these states impact behavior and performance.

Barriers addressed include early performance anxiety, fear of mistakes, and emotional reactivity and team dynamics. Athletes learn how to return to a Green (regulated) state through simple tools such as breath, mindfulness, body awareness, and positive self-talk.

Outcome: Athletes build awareness and can return to a regulated state more consistently.

  • As competitive demands increase, athletes must learn to perform individually and as a team in Green, but also effectively in Yellow (heightened pressure) states.

Instruction focuses on applying mental performance tools in real-time competition.

Barriers addressed include perfectionism, overthinking, and inconsistent confidence. Athletes learn how to reset quickly when moving into Red, and how to channel Yellow into focused, controlled performance.

Mental recovery and rest are introduced as essential for returning to Green and sustaining performance over time.

Outcome: Athletes can regulate, reset, and perform consistently across different pressure states.

  • At this stage, athletes develop the ability to manage their internal state independently, while encouraging and leading others becoming a teammate others want to follow. Instruction focuses on identity development, ownership, and leadership within team environments.

Athletes learn how to maintain Green states more consistently, recognize early signs of Yellow and Red, and support teammates in returning to a performance-ready state.

Barriers addressed include identity tied solely to performance, burnout risk, and pressure related to outcomes.

Outcome: Athletes become self-regulated leaders who can sustain high-level performance and positively influence team environments.

  • Athlete development is shaped by the environment. Coaches and parents play a critical role in reinforcing how athletes interpret and respond to pressure.

This pathway includes education and tools for coaches and parents to:

    • Recognize athlete states (Green, Yellow, Red) and respond effectively

    • Communicate in ways that move athletes back into a learning and performance state

    • Reduce pressure-based responses such as anxiety and perfectionism

    • Reinforce recovery, confidence, and resilience in real time

Outcome: A consistent environment that supports regulation, learning, and performance.

Why It Matters

Today’s athletes are more skilled than ever, but many struggle with performance anxiety, perfectionism, pressure, burnout, and inconsistent confidence. A developmentally aligned system that teaches athletes how to manage these states is essential for both performance and long-term development.

What This Builds

This pathway develops athletes who can stay in or return to a Green (performance-ready) state, respond effectively when in Yellow, and recover quickly from Red—allowing them to perform consistently under pressure.

Every rep, every mistake, and every moment of pressure becomes an opportunity for growth and performance.

What We Will Deliver

Beginning August 2026, we will launch the Human First Athlete Pathway™ for Real Colorado Soccer across the 13–18 age groups. This includes structured, age-specific mental performance development delivered through Human First Athlete Always™ programming.

We are committed to building Real Colorado Soccer a long-term system, with new content and progression released each Fall and Spring season to ensure athletes continue to grow as they advance through each stage of the pathway.

This creates a consistent, scalable model that supports athlete development year over year, aligned with Real Colorado’s mission and competitive standards.

We welcome collaboration on implementation and structure, including whether this pathway is designed for elite-level teams or scaled across the full club experience.
